Horses, Trails and
Wine Provides a Picturesque Setting at Southwind Vineyard and Winery

Imagine strolling through pastures and walking trails with a
bottle of New Jersey Cab Franc and wine glass in hand. That’s the idyllic
setting you will find at Southwind Vineyard and Winery located in Millville in
Cumberland County.

Southwind Vineyard is family owned and operated by husband
and wife team of Joseph Riley and Lorre Allen. The 100 acre farm, purchased in
2002, has operated since 1978, first as a Dressage barn, and now expanded to
include beautiful walking trails, a vineyard, and the winery to complement the
pastures.

Guests that arrive driving up the path to the tasting room can
see rare Lipizzan breed horses in the stable area. Visitors are invited to visit
the winery and tasting room for a glass of wine under a shady magnolia tree,
watching the horses graze. You are also welcome to bring your dog and walk the
enchanted trails or bring some snacks and have a picnic.

Southwind is a Dressage barn and boarding
establishment.  With acres of lush
pastures and two dressage arenas, horses are well kept and well trained. The
three horses visitors can get a look at while enjoying their visit to Southwind
are:

Pluto Sabella, of the rare Lipizzan breed of dancing white
horses which has been grand champion in the Lipizzan breed class at Dressage at
Devon 4 of the past 5 years!  Pluto is
Lorre’s pride and joy.

Conversano Raiba is also a Lipizzan who is a retired
performance horse who has performed in Las Vegas as well as at Southwind.

Sahara is an Arab mix who is happy to have guests take
lessons on.  She is a solid citizen and a
delight to deal with.  She is also
Pluto’s constant companion.

As you enter the tasting room Deb Salanitro will introduce
you to the Southwind wall of wine prior to taking guests on a unique tasting
experience, offering a tasting palette that costs $5 per person, with guests
choosing eight wines to sample.

The winemaking is handled by Lorre Allen and Matt McDermott,
who started out making mead and is now assisting Lorre in developing their wines
made in the Bordeaux style. Southwind strives to make wines that are deep in
color, lush in viscosity and body, with a balance of discreet tannins and crisp
acidity.   Their special blend of
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and a hint of Chambourcin is called
Blood, Sweat and Tears for obvious reasons and is one of the most popular wines
that has won several medals including a bronze in the New Jersey Wine Competition.

“It is most gratifying to watch people sample wines I have
had a hand in making and enjoying them,” notes McDermott. “It’s truly a great
working environment and one that is so much fun to be part of.”
